To understand how the expansion valve works in an AC device, you must realize that temperature and pressure have a direct relationship working together.
Increasing the pressure of a refrigerant also increases its temperature, packing its liquid molecules more tightly together.
This dual increase is exactly what happens when the refrigerant easily passes through the compressor. The pressure and temperature relationship generally works in the opposite direction as well. By reducing the refrigerant’s pressure, that means you can cool the refrigerant off effectively. The expansion valve’s purpose is to totally restrict the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator coil. Without the expansion valve, the volume of refrigerant would rush into the evaporator coil separate from losing any of its required pressure. The expansion valve only permits a small section of the refrigerant to easily enter the coil. As the refrigerant enters, it finds itself able to spread out in the previously empty evaporator coil. This expansion causes its pressure to decrease rather abruptly and the temperature drops along with it. As far as air conditioning components go, I can tell you that expansion valves tend to be tough. As a result, they experience fewer issues over time than more delicate parts of a system such as a compressor, however expansion valves have to withstand extremely substantial amounts of pressure from the liquid line side so they have to be very built tough, then however, over time, this pressure can cause the expansion valve to eventually split down and if it fails, it won’t be capable of limiting the flow of refrigerant and your AC system won’t be able to cool as efficiently. The expansion valve plays a key career in the regular functioning of a cooling system.
